Galveston Wharves Port Director and CEO

The Port of Galveston Police Department is crucial in safeguarding public safety and security within the expansive 840-acre port. Led by Chief Kenneth Brown, a seasoned law enforcement professional with more than 25 years of experience, the department consists of 34 sworn officers, 6 telecommunicators, and 2 civilian office staff.

Considering the port’s activity as a top-ranked cargo and cruise port, our police officers are presented with unique challenges. Chief Brown expertly oversees the department's round-the-clock operation, employing four shifts of law enforcement officers and dispatchers.

Port officers are specially trained to navigate the distinct intricacies of port-related situations. They collaborate closely with local, state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Galveston County Sheriff's Department, and city of Galveston police, fire and emergency medical services. This collaborative effort ensures a comprehensive approach to public safety and security.

The department is involved in all aspects of daily port operations. From monitoring and facilitating entry into secured areas to engaging with ship captains to review regulations and security directives, the officers actively contribute to smooth cargo operations. They surveil port facilities for potential safety hazards, breaches of security, and environmental risks.

Officers also play an important role in safety and security for the more than 1 million cruise passengers who embark each year from North America's fourth busiest cruise port. Beyond terminal security services contracted by the cruise lines, port police enforce the law, address passenger concerns, and facilitate traffic flow.

Thanks to our port police, our port-operated cruise parking facilities are the safest on the island. They patrol the lots and monitor security cameras around the clock.

In 2022, the Port of Galveston Police Department demonstrated remarkable dedication, responding to 39,884 calls for service, processing 1,019 police reports, and handling 43 vehicle accidents. Additionally, they collected more than 670 pieces of evidence and issued 393 traffic citations.

We also have a presence on the water. Specially trained Marine Division officers operate a state-of-the-art, 31-foot police boat with cutting-edge navigational and rescue equipment. They patrol the waterways, oversee vessel escorts, and actively monitor and mitigate potential threats or hazards. The division also plays a vital role in search and rescue missions, swiftly responding to emergencies and calls from distressed vessels.

In 2021, the Port of Galveston Police Department earned accreditation through the Law Enforcement Best Practices program established by the Texas Police Chiefs Association. This accreditation places the department among Texas's top-tier law enforcement agencies, demonstrating its commitment to excellence.

The Port of Galveston Police Department is vital in keeping the port, its workers and its guests safe and secure. Their dedicated work often goes unnoticed as they ensure a thriving maritime hub. Go blue!

“Smoke on the Water & Fire in the Sky” 2023 Fireworks Celebration Kickoff Sunday, July 2 at Port Canaveral

Event parking and traffic plan emphasizes safety and organized exit

Port Canaveral, FL – June 26, 2023 – Skies above Port Canaveral will light up with color and sound on Sunday July 2nd for the annual “Smoke on the Water & Fire in the Sky” fireworks celebration being hosted by the Cove Merchants Association at Port Canaveral and the Canaveral Port Authority. The festivities begin at 5:00 PM and the fireworks will launch after dark at 9:00 PM.

The event at Port Canaveral is the first of three area fireworks celebrations that are the hallmark of the Space Coast’s Independence Day events - July 3rd fireworks at Cocoa Beach, followed by July 4th fireworks at Cocoa Village.

Public access for viewing the July 2nd fireworks at Port Canaveral will be available at the Cove District and the Port’s Exploration Tower Lawn. Free parking will be available at The Cove parking lot for patrons of The Cove restaurants until capacity is reached. Designated parking areas at Port Canaveral will be available for the fireworks event at $10 per vehicle, cash or credit cards accepted. See Parking Overview map below for designated lot locations.

There are no public viewing locations on the north side of Port Canaveral (“A” Cruise Terminals and North Cargo Operations) or on any portion of State Road 401.

Special Event Traffic Plan

A comprehensive special event parking and traffic flow plan was jointly developed by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Canaveral Fire Rescue and Canaveral Port Authority Public Safety to promote safe arrival at the Port before the event and exiting the Port once the fireworks display concludes. The traffic flow plan will have road closures in the Cove Restaurant District and utilize one-way directional exiting of Port roads following the event.

To help expedite traffic departure and flow, the parking lot that a guest chooses for their vehicle will determine what road may be used for exiting the lot. Guests planning to attend the event should review the parking and traffic flow maps prior to arrival, make their plans accordingly, and follow electronic signs to their desired lot.

Electronic and fixed signage will be located on roadways and intersections in the Port to direct motorists arriving for the festivities. Deputies, parking attendants and staff will be located at key traffic intersections around the Port to assist motorists.

Visitors should select the parking lot that offers the most efficient exit to the roadway needed for their return trip. For example, a motorist who wants to return to Merritt Island should park in Lot A or B. Or a guest returning to beachside communities should park in Lot B, D or the Overflow Lot. Guests who park in The Cove dining and entertainment district may exit either way but should expect longer delays.

NOTE: The Cove parking lot is free for patrons of Cove businesses.

–  The Star-Studded Christening Event to Feature Performances by Latin Celebrity Superstars Including Paulina Rubio, Marcello Hernandez and Pedro Capó –

MIAMI, June 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, announced today that GRAMMY® nominated, and five-time Latin GRAMMY® winning singer, songwriter, musician and producer, Luis Fonsi, will serve as the godfather of its newest ship, Norwegian Viva, the second ship of the Brand's groundbreaking Prima Class. The ship will be christened in Miami before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico this fall.

Best known for his extensive list of radio hits including the award-winning, global chart-topping hit, "Despacito," which was featured on Billboard's "Hot Latin Song" list for a record-breaking 56 consecutive weeks, Puerto Rican-born Fonsi will fulfill the longstanding maritime tradition of blessing and officially naming Norwegian Viva at the Nov. 28, 2023 christening ceremony in Miami, the "Cruise Capital of the World." The "Live it Up!" theme of Norwegian Viva will continue throughout the evening, with a lineup of leading Latin entertainers joining Fonsi, including The Queen of Latin Pop, Paulina Rubio; "Saturday Night Live" cast member and Miami-native, Marcello Hernandez; and singer, Pedro Capó, all of which will deliver exclusive performances throughout the night.

"We are thrilled to welcome Latin music icon Luis Fonsi to the NCL family as Godfather of Norwegian Viva and to join us as we christen our newest ship," said David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line. "Miami, our hometown, is immersed in Latin culture, and we want to celebrate Norwegian Viva's debut with an infusion of Latin talent headlined by Luis. As a native Puerto Rican, who is also based in Miami, he brings people together from around the world with his energy, positivity and music, making him the perfect complement to the vibrant energy of Norwegian Viva. We cannot wait for him to join us as we celebrate this milestone moment later this year."

On Nov. 28, 2023, Luis Fonsi will officiate the ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle on the ship's bow to bid the vessel and its travelers good fortune on their voyage, a fundamental nautical tradition customary for any ship launch. After completing its christening voyage, Norwegian Viva will be the newest ship to homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico upon arrival on Dec. 15, 2023. It will offer a variety of seven-day Caribbean voyages through April 2024 with calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St John's, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, before returning for a summer season of cruises to Europe from Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; and Rome (Civitavecchia) and Venice (Trieste), Italy.

"I am so honored to be named Godfather of NCL's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, and look forward to sharing her with the amazing people of Puerto Rico, a community that truly represents the spirit of 'live it up'" said Luis Fonsi, award-winning global artist. "Growing up on an island, the ocean plays such an important part in my life, and there is nowhere else I'd rather be. Cruising provides such an incredible vacation experience, and I cannot wait to christen this incredible ship and to introduce her to the world."

Norwegian Viva is the second of six vessels in the company's groundbreaking Prima Class and sister ship to the award-winning Norwegian Prima. The elevated offerings of the Prima Class prioritize the guest experience and raise the bar on cruising through world-class cuisine, the brand's most spacious design yet, and stellar onboard activities including the Viva Speedway— the three-level racetrack. Norwegian Viva features many of the outstanding onboard experiences that makes the Prima Class in a league of its own including Indulge Food Hall, the upscale food market exhibiting 11 unique eateries; the fastest slides at sea, The Drop and Rush; and NCL's industry-exclusive sustainable cocktail bar, the Metropolitan Bar. Debuting in August 2023, Norwegian Viva will sail a selection of bucket-list-worthy Greek Isles and Mediterranean voyages through November, before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December 2023 for a season of Caribbean itineraries.

To commemorate this exciting partnership and celebrate the all-star entertainment lineup to be featured at Norwegian Viva's christening event, NCL has put together a Live it Up! Spotify playlist inspired by top Latin music superstars.

Cartier

A reference in the world of luxury, Cartier, whose name is synonymous with open-mindedness and curiosity, stands out with its creations and reveals beauty wherever it may lie. Jewelry, high jewelry, watchmaking and fragrances, leather goods and accessories: Cartier's creations symbolize the convergence between exceptional craftsmanship and a timeless signature. Today, Cartier has a worldwide presence through its network of flagships and boutiques, authorized retail partners, and online.

Panerai

Italianity, Marine World, Swiss Technicity and Modern Heroes: the four pillars that have long defined Panerai are translated into its first floating boutique, an immersive environment dedicated to the discovery of the Maison’s legendary DNA.

Founded in Florence in 1860 and still profoundly inspired by its origins, Panerai draws from its Italian design inheritance and cultural grounding to infuse both the Brand’s timepieces and store concept. With an illustrious history as the official purveyor of precision instruments to the Italian Royal Navy, a masterful Swiss expertise and an innovative spirit of technological research, Panerai is the depiction of pioneering luxury watchmaking, inextricably devoted to the sea, underwater exploration and journeys across the oceans of the planet.

Piaget

Piaget epitomizes daring creativity – a quality that has continued to permeate through the Maison since its beginnings in 1874. From his first workshop in La Côte-aux-Fées, Georges-Edouard Piaget devoted himself to crafting high-precision movements in a feat that formed the very foundations of their pioneering name. In the late 1950s, Piaget unveiled the ultra-thin movements that would later become the Maison’s trademark and the cornerstone of the Altiplano collection. As a true innovator of the watch and jewelry world, Piaget strongly believed in creativity and artistic values. It is within the walls of their “Ateliers de l’Extraordinaire” where master artisans continue to harness rare skills that have been preserved and perfected from generation to generation, transforming gold, stones and precious gems into dazzling works of art. Through its pursuit of masterful craftsmanship, the Maison has created emblems of daring excellence channelled into its collections including Altiplano, Piaget Polo, Limelight Gala, Possession, Piaget Sunlight, Piaget Rose and Extremely Piaget.

The stores will open on board EXPLORA I on July 17,2023, and will be available exclusively to Explora Journeys guests.

With various selections of new and old world options, celebration wines, classic tastings and dessert pairings, each offering has been hand selected by Oceania Cruises' culinary team with every bottle taking 6-8 months to receive from elite suppliers in the industry. Highlights from the new collection include rare wine varieties like the classic Moët & Chandon Cuvée Dom Pérignon, Epernay, France, the famous Château Mouton Rothschild, 1er Cru Classe, Pauillac, France, the elegant Ornellaia "Super Tuscan", Bolgheri Superiore, Tuscany, Italy, the hard to source Mascot, Napa Valley, California and the newly popular Vina Errazuriz Kai Carmenère, Aconcagua Valley, Chile. Guests are invited to try these newly featured labels and more at all restaurants, bars and suites across all seven ships, as well as various size bottles ranging from half sized to magnum.

"As we continue to expand our rare wine program and world-class onboard experiences, we are privileged to rely on the expert knowledge of our top culinary team who are actively collaborating and seeking out new products in the global food and beverage scene," said Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. "We look forward to hearing the stories of our guests' memorable moments and shared celebrations while enjoying the new collection.

"We're excited to launch Oceania Cruises' new wine collection featuring the highest quality, hand-picked rare wine labels that reflect the global philosophy of the company," said Daniela Oancea, Corporate Beverage Manager of Oceania Cruises. "We are lucky to have built close relationships with the world's most exclusive producers who have dedicated their lives to the art of winemaking and are continuously tasting and discovering new varieties to keep up with modern trends."

Complementing the new rare wine collection and leaning into the popularity of its thoughtfully crafted exclusive wine pairing dinners on its 1,200 guest ships Marina, Riviera, and Vista, the only cruise ships in the world designed specifically for foodies by foodies, Oceania Cruises has additionally launched three new dining experiences and five new pairing menus on its newest vessel, Vista. Taking inspiration from the new collection, guests now have the opportunity to join the head sommelier and his team during a two-hour exclusive Cellar's Wine Luncheon in the fleet's newest restaurant Ember. This hand-selected tasting takes guests on a bespoke dining journey into the culinary world of food and wine, featuring a five-course menu with each dish perfectly and intentionally paired with a different premium wine. New for the line, Vista has additionally added eight-person private dining rooms in its iconic Polo Grill and Toscana restaurants, each delivering two new tantalizing menus featuring a specially curated selection of gourmet dishes paired with premium wines from the onboard culinary team. With only eight guests per night, parties may select from the Polo Classic Menu, Polo Premium Menu, Toscana Classic Menu or Toscana Premium Menu.

With the highest percentage of culinary personnel devoted to the dining experience with one chef to every ten guests, exceptional cuisine has been a hallmark for Oceania Cruises since its first sailing in 2003. Earning the reputation as the cruise line of choice for epicureans, Oceania Cruises uses the freshest ingredients with all dishes prepared à la minute from its onboard Michelin-star quality galley. From exquisite fine dining partnerships to top interactive mixology experiences, Oceania Cruises continues to prioritize innovation in this sector with the finest culinary experiences offered while en-route to dreamworthy destinations.

European Waterways Reports Increased Demand for Its Luxury Hotel Barges During the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, July 26 – August 11, 2024

European Waterways Reports Increased Demand for Its Luxury Hotel Barges
During the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, July 26 – August 11, 2024

The Olympics are among the most popular sporting events in the world. With many of the 2024 summer games to be held in Paris, July 26 – August 11, 2024, hotels are already selling out. Luxury hotel barge cruising specialist European Waterways, whose vessels cruise the scenic countryside of France, is among the companies benefiting from an anticipated influx of 15 million visitors. Some of its most popular hotel barges cruise just hours from the city, making them convenient for guests to catch the games and enjoy a cruise as part of their visits.

“We still have availability on cabins and charters in the weeks surrounding the Olympics,” said Derek Banks, European Waterways’ Managing Director. “But we’re advising travelers to secure their spaces as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

With free pick-up from Paris by private chauffeured minibus as part of their all-inclusive offerings, hotel barges
Renaissance, L’Art de Vivre and La Belle Epoque – the three nearest to Paris – are seeing an especially strong uptick in inquiries.

A Winning Combination
European Waterways’ eight-passenger hotel barge Renaissance cruises France’s oldest canal, the
Canal de Briare, in Western Burgundy. Its route passes such notable attractions as the seven-lock flight of Rogny-les-sept-Ecluses, which is a national historic monument. The vessel also crosses Gustave Eiffel’s unique aqueduct at Briare, which spans the River Loire.

Among its excursions is a private tour of the
Château de La Bussière that includes a cooking demonstration using produce from the gardens, as well as a private tour of the 11th century château Montargis and the 12th century Church of the Madeleine. Guests also enjoy a private wine tasting at the Sancerre winery of La Perriere. Other highlights include a tour and private lunch at the studio home of Rosa Bonheur, a 19th century artist renowned for her exceptional animal paintings. She is also known for her portrait of America’s Buffalo Bill Cody, whom she saw as an embodiment of the freedom and independence of the United States.

The eight-passenger L’Art de Vivre offers an immersive cruise through France's historic region of Burgundy. Excursions include a visit to the wine village of Chablis and a private tasting at the prestigious Chablis house of Domaine Laroche. This is followed by a visit to its cellar and lunch, served by a private chef, in the Domaine’s dining hall.

L’Art de Vivre traces its origins to World War One, when it supplied Allied troops during the Battle of the Somme. It was fully transformed to a “life of luxury” with wood and brass décor, modern en suite facilities, and a saloon featuring contemporary leather and traditional furnishings. Among its varied excursions is a visit to the quarry of Aubigny, source of the stone for many of Paris’s iconic buildings, followed by a crémant wine tasting in the cellars of Bailly Lapierre. Guests also visit the pilgrimage village of Vezelay and its hilltop basilica and the 12th century Château de Bazoches.

The 12-passenger La Belle Epoque, which once carried logs from Burgundy to Paris, today offers a luxury experience that envelops guests in elegance and comfort, with a wood-paneled saloon, hand-built seating and a spacious sundeck with a spa pool. Treating guests to the best of Northern Burgundy, excursions include a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abbaye de Fontenay, a private tasting of Chablis wines at the Domaine Laroche, and a visit to the Château de Commarin, where guests will meet the 26th resident owner, Count Bertrand de Vogue, before witnessing an exclusive falconry display. Other favorites include a private meal with a Baroness at the magnificent Château de Ricey-Bas.

All vessels offer themed charters such as biking, family, golf, and wine appreciation, among others.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (June 15, 2023) – The most engaging family activity zone ever featured on a Princess cruise ship is setting a course for adventure aboard the new Sun Princess, when the first Sphere Class vessel debuts Park19 in February 2024. Located on the top decks of Sun Princess, Park19 features nine engaging activities for the entire family to enjoy in a newly envisioned space perfect for fun and sun for all generations.

“Park19 as the name suggests is a new space created for all our guests, including activities to bring together multi-generational travel families in a location with spectacular views and fun outdoor activities for all,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “The new area was tailored based on guest feedback for more family and group activities spaces.”

Located on decks 19, 20, and 21, Park19 was envisioned for active guests and multi-generational families to explore and connect through inclusive and engaging activities, including:

  • Sea Breeze – Inspired by the dream of hang gliding but in a safe environment, the Sea Breeze is the first Rollglider on a cruise ship and takes guests high above to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and breathtaking ports of call. Using an overhead track, guests are seated and harnessed to this electric ride which reaches speeds of up to 11 mph during the 60- to 90-second experience that is also ADA accessible.

  • Coastal Climb On this engaging climbing structure guests ascend from decks 19 to 20 through a series of obstacles. Once at the top, guests can take in the gorgeous views before sliding back down to the bottom.

  • The Lookout – At the top of the climbing structure, adventurers make their way to The Lookout open-air observation deck to take in stunning 360º views from the highest point available to guests onboard Sun Princess.

  • The Net – Harnessed above deck 19, guests are challenged to trek across unstable bridges, a z-shaped balance beam and climb cargo nets.

  • Infinite Horizon – For those who love heights, leaning tilt walls cantilevered over the side of the ship allow guests to peer out from deck 19 and look down to deck nine and beyond.

  • Hammock Area – Another first for Princess, relaxing hammocks allow Park19 visitors to take a break from exploring to hang out with family and friends.

  • Splash Zone – A whimsical splash area with pop jets and a beautiful water sculpture offer a refreshing and relaxing area to chill.

  • Recreational Court – From ping pong, shuffleboard, Xponential Fitness classes and morning meditation, a rotation of sports and wellness options will be offered to guests in this multifunction sports court.

  • Jogging Track – A refreshing open-air track allows guests to walk, jog or run at their own leisure and pace, with 6.7 times around the track equaling one mile.

Additional family-centric offerings onboard Sun Princess are found in the Youth & Teen Centers located on decks six and seven where activities and age-appropriate areas abound for all younger guests ages six months to 17. These complimentary areas include:

  • Firefly Park – For the youngest Princess guests, this imaginative space, located on deck six, invites youngsters ages six months to seven years old and their families to explore, play and socialize. This family center is a place to play together or drop kids off for a program of art projects, theme parties and group games. Firefly Park also invites families with babies and toddlers, ages six months to three, to crawl and engage their senses with a dedicated play area. After hours group babysitting is available from 10 pm – 1 am for $5 per hour, for ages three - 12.

  • Neon Grove (tweens) and The Underground (teens) – Located on deck seven, two separate areas offer an inviting space for tweens and teens to hang out, socialize, and just have fun. Both spaces feature colorful, comfy sofas and chairs for lounging, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles, plus air hockey, foosball, and skeeball. Program activities for these age groups include ship scavenger hunts, movie nights, friendly competitions, and dance parties.

“These expanded offerings give younger cruisers plenty to explore and enjoy aboard Sun Princess, creating an even more family-friendly experience with something for everyone regardless of age,” Padgett added.

Like all Princess ships, Sun Princess is a MedallionClass ship helping families stay connected on board via the OceanCompass shipmate locator and chat feature, along with MedallionNet, the best Wi-Fi at sea, making it easy to brag about their experiences by sharing photos and videos via social media.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will offer an array of exciting new dining, entertainment, and activity offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories.

With the most balconies on any Princess ship, guests can take in the sunshine and crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean or Caribbean from the comfort of their cabin. The Dome, a transformational entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini, is the perfect place to relax and the three-story Horizons Dining Room is sure to have everyone talking.

VIKING’S NEWEST OCEAN SHIP NAMED BY METROPOLITAN OPERA CHAIRMAN ANN ZIFF

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

VIKING’S NEWEST OCEAN SHIP NAMED BY METROPOLITAN OPERA CHAIRMAN ANN ZIFF

The 930-Guest Viking Saturn Was Named in the New York Harbor at Manhattan Cruise Terminal

Los Angeles (June 6, 2023) – Viking® (www.viking.com) today named its newest ocean ship, the Viking Saturn®, with a celebration in New York City. As part of the event, the ship’s ceremonial godmother, Ann Ziff, the esteemed philanthropist and Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera, a longtime Viking cultural partner, offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing for the ship—a maritime tradition that dates back thousands of years. The ship will now continue her inaugural season, sailing two new Viking voyages: Iconic Iceland, Greenland & Canada, between New York City and Reykjavik, and Iceland & Norway’s Arctic Explorer, between Reykjavik and Bergen.

“This is a very proud day for Viking as we name our newest identical ocean ship in New York City, one of the great cultural capitals of the world,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “It is especially fitting that Ann Ziff, Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera—one of the world’s greatest cultural institutions—has honored us by serving as godmother of the Viking Saturn. We thank Ann for her loyalty as a Viking guest, as well as her many impressive contributions to the arts and other important causes.”

“It is an honor to be godmother of the new Viking Saturn and celebrate this momentous occasion in New York,” said Ann Ziff. “Viking and the Metropolitan Opera share a common goal in creating enriching experiences throughout the world and there is no doubt the Viking Saturn will do just that for her guests.”

In keeping with the naming tradition, during the ceremony Ziff used the steel sword from the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore to cut a ribbon that allowed a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull. The prop sword was originally used by baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the role of Count di Luna in David McVicar’s production, which premiered in the 2008-2009 season. Prior to the ribbon cutting, the sword was presented to Ziff by Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon, who is also the godmother of the Viking Mars® and a Viking Longship, the Viking Skadi.

As part of the ceremony, guests also enjoyed performances from Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos and godmother of the Viking Jupiter® and Norwegian violinist Tor Jaran Apold. Following a celebratory dinner on board the ship, stars of the Metropolitan Opera—soprano Susanna Phillips, tenor Charles Castronovo, and baritone Quinn Kelsey—treated guests to a performance of opera classics, including selections from Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka, Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, as well as a collection of American musical classics from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and others.

Ann Ziff, Godmother of the Viking Saturn

A dedicated philanthropist focused on the arts, education, culture and environmental conservation, Ann Ziff is Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera and serves on several boards, including the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Sing for Hope, the World Science Festival and the Los Angeles Opera. Passionate about bringing culture and arts into the lives of children in need, she co-founded Smile Train and was a board member at Maloto, an organization that provides education and housing for abused and abandoned girls in Malawi. Ms. Ziff also has an eponymous fine jewelry brand, Tamsen Z, where she designs and creates one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by her love of culture, art and music as well as her travels as a loyal Viking guest.

Viking and the Metropolitan Opera

As one of the world’s foremost cultural institutions and the largest classical music organization in North America, the Metropolitan Opera is home to the most creative and talented singers, conductors, composers, musicians, and artists around the world and has been a Viking cultural partner since 2016. On board Viking’s ocean ships, guests are treated to the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning Live in HD series, including an exclusive viewing of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. As part of Viking’s continued commitment to support enriching, cultural programming, other premier partnerships and sponsorships include Ballet Sun Valley, BBC, Highclere Castle, Los Angeles Philharmonic, PBS’ MASTERPIECE, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Oslo’s Munch Museum, TED and many others.

The Viking Saturn

The Viking Saturn is the newest ship in Viking’s award-winning ocean fleet of identical sister ships, which also includes the Viking Star®, the Viking Sea®, the Viking Sky®, the Viking Orion®, the Viking Jupiter®, the Viking Venus®, the Viking Mars®, and the Viking Neptune®. Classified by Cruise Critic as “small ships,” Viking’s ocean vessels have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, with 465 staterooms that can host 930 guests; the ships feature all veranda staterooms, Scandinavian design, light-filled public spaces and abundant al fresco dining options.

The naming of the Viking Saturn comes as the company continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary and its most successful single month of bookings in January 2023, following recent years of strong growth. Since 2020, Viking has welcomed 17 new ships to its fleet—including eight new Viking Longships on the rivers of Europe; new purpose-built vessels on the Mekong, Nile and Mississippi rivers; four new, identical ocean ships; and two Polar Class expedition vessels. Most recently, Viking was voted “Best Cruise Line” by Food & Wine readers in the publication’s inaugural Global Tastemakers Awards. In March 2023, the company dominated Cruise Critic’s Cruisers’ Choice Awards, receiving top honors in six categories including “Best Overall Line,” “Best River Line,” and “Best Dining” for its ocean and expedition voyages. Additionally, Viking has been named both the #1 Ocean Line and #1 River Line by both Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler, making it the first line ever to simultaneously earn #1 in its categories from both publications.

MSC CRUISES OFFICIALLY NAMES ITS NEWEST FLAGSHIP, MSC EURIBIA, TONIGHT IN COPENHAGEN – MARKING SIGNIFICANT STEP TOWARD COMPANY’S NET ZERO 2050 PLEDGE

  • MSC Euribia is the most energy-efficient cruise ship design ever - powered by LNG and featuring a range of technologies and solutions that minimize impact on the air and marine environment

  • Tonight’s traditional maritime ceremony will be attended by distinguished guests, key travel partners and international media

  • MSC Euribia to set sail for her inaugural season in Northern Europe, offering guests a wide variety of new and enriching experiences never before seen at sea

Copenhagen, Denmark – June 8, 2023 MSC Cruises will welcome its much-anticipated new flagship to the fleet tonight during a Naming Ceremony taking place in Copenhagen. The traditional maritime ceremony will honor traditional maritime heritage and pay tribute to the environmentally advanced MSC Euribia, which is designed to be the most energy-efficient cruise ship ever.

MSC Euribia is MSC Cruises’ second vessel powered by LNG, the cleanest marine fuel currently commercially available at scale. On board, she boasts a range of best-in-class environmental technology, including advanced onboard wastewater treatment systems and waste management handling. GO ON A CRUISE WITH COSTA AND EXPERIENCE THE EXCITEMENT OF THE RYDER CUP 2023

The Italian company, as the official cruise line of the Ryder Cup 2023, is offering a unique opportunity to watch the most important team tournament in world golf, which will be held in Italy for the first time, by booking a cruise onboard the Costa Smeralda or the Costa Toscana, the most innovative ships in the fleet.

Genoa, 8 June 2023 - Costa Cruises, an Italian company and Official Cruise Line of the 2023 Ryder Cup, presents a truly unique opportunity for all golf enthusiasts.

The Ryder Cup, the most important international team competition in world golf, is set to take place in Italy for the first time in its history. From September 25 to October 1, 2023, a selection of the best U.S. players and a selection of the best European players will compete on the course of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. The anticipation for this sport event, among the most watched in the world, is sky-high: tickets for the closing days of the tournament, from Friday September 29 to Sunday October 1, are now sold out.

Except for Costa Cruises guests. In fact, by booking a cruise on the Costa Smeralda or Costa Toscana, the most innovative ships in the Costa fleet, guests will also have the possibility to attend the closing rounds of the Ryder Cup 2023.

The offer includes several options for maximum flexibility. The first applies to the two Costa Toscana (Sept. 21 to 28) and Costa Smeralda (Sept. 22 to 29) cruises preceding the Ryder Cup weekend. At the end of the cruise, in the port of Civitavecchia, guests will be able to travel independently to the Marco Simone Golf Club to enjoy the matches scheduled for the final days, the most exciting time in the tournament.  This first option allows guests to enjoy unforgettable experiences on board the two ships - such as the Archipelago Restaurant with menus by great chefs Bruno Barbieri, Hélène Darroze and Ángel León, or the Solemio spa overlooking the sea -, visit magnificent destinations in the Mediterranean (Civitavecchia/Rome, Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, Cagliari and Naples for Costa Toscana; Civitavecchia/Rome, Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and Palermo for Costa Smeralda) and then end the vacation on a high note by attending the Ryder Cup.

Another option to enjoy the Ryder Cup, however, is to purchase any cruise departing aboard Costa Smeralda until 30 November 2023, including the "Cruise & Golf" package, regardless of the date of the cruise. This option is particularly suitable for golf enthusiasts who like to test themselves on the green.  Indeed, the "Cruise & golf" package allows guests to play at some of the most prestigious golf clubs in the Mediterranean during the port calls included in the Costa Smeralda itinerary, choosing up to 4 of the 24 best courses in Italy, France and Spain; while at the same time enjoying a Costa vacation to the fullest.

Costa Cruises' "Cruise & Golf" formula is a true "easy golf" experience, free of worries.  In addition to Green Fees, the formula includes a number of special services for maximum comfort. Among these, dedicated transfers from the ship to the golf club and back, priority embarkation and disembarkation at the beginning and end of the cruise, insurance and onboard storage of golf equipment, and a welcome kit in the cabin. In addition, this option includes a special offer dedicated to golfers and their families to enjoy the exceptional variety of restaurants available on Costa Smeralda and to try a range of selected treatments and services in the "Solemio" spa and beauty salon on board.

The premium cruise line is introducing new facets of the program throughout the 2023 Alaska season that offer an even more engaging guest experience.

Sustainable Seafood

In 2022, Holland America Line was awarded Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification — making it the first cruise line to achieve this distinguished credential by serving only fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood. On any Alaska cruise, the line serves more than 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon, 1,000 pounds of Alaska cod, 800 pounds of Alaska halibut, 500 pounds of Alaska rockfish and more.

All menus highlight “Taste Alaska” by calling out region-specific dishes and fresh fish options.

Holland America Line’s EXC Talks continue to bring each destination to life with captivating storytelling and expert commentary. On Alaska cruises, guests can attend “Ancestral Memories,” “Breaking the Ice Ceiling,” “Pacific Giants,” “The Iditarod” and “We Are Alaska” to learn more about local culture and customs.

New to the EXC programming, Holland America Line is bringing on a Huna Native Interpreter in traditional dress during the stay at Juneau to introduce guests to the history of the Tlingit people with “Native Voices: Stories of the Tlingit People.”

Wildlife Experts and Park Rangers

A new wildlife expert on board helps guests witness the majestic animals found in Alaska. Guests can be on the lookout for humpback whales, orcas, bald eagles, moose, sea otters, caribou, black and grizzly bears, Dall’s porpoise and more. The daily program highlights designated times to meet the wildlife expert on deck to go in search of the animals in their natural environment.

Holland America Line also is introducing a Wildlife Spotting Guide that points out the native animals found along the cruise route and includes a map with the best places to spot each species. Between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., all wildlife sightings will be announced so guests may go on deck and enjoy viewing.

During Glacier Bay scenic cruising, Holland America Line continues to bring on a Glacier Bay National Park Ranger for the day to engage with guests and talk about Alaska’s most famous national park.

All cruises on Westerdam roundtrip from Seattle feature a presentation by The Alaska Raptor Center at Sitka. Hosted by the wildlife expert, one of the center’s Avian Care Specialists comes aboard with a raptor (eagle, hawk, owl, etc.) to share insights about Alaska’s majestic birds in the World Stage.

On Deck for A Cause: Alaska’s Parks

For the 2023 Alaska season, Holland America Line is donating proceeds from the “On Deck for a Cause” event aboard ships in the region to Alaska Geographic, the nonprofit education partner of Alaska’s parks, forests, refuges and conservation lands. Called “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks,” guests on all Alaska cruises are invited to donate $25 to participate in a noncompetitive 5k fundraising walk aboard every sailing.

Holland America Line has six ships exploring Alaska in 2023 on seven- or 14-day cruises from Seattle, Washington; Vancouver, Canada; and Whittier/Anchorage, Alaska, along with Cruisetours up to 18 days, which combine an overland to Denali National Park and the Yukon plus a cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Earns Port of Vancouver’s Blue Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

Disney Cruise Line Earns Port of Vancouver’s Blue Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship

CELEBRATION, Fla. (June 8, 2023) – Disney Cruise Line (DCL) received the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Blue Circle Award for the 10th consecutive year, recognizing the cruise line’s participation last year in the port’s voluntary EcoAction Program and Energy Action Initiative.

“This award demonstrates our long-standing commitment to operating responsibly and sustainably, especially while sailing in the Pacific Northwest,” said Barry Compagnoni, DCL’s Vice President for Safety, Security and Environmental Policy and Compliance. “By doing our part to reduce emissions, conserve energy and protect the rich biodiversity of the region, we are proud to continue our legacy of taking actions that support a healthier environment.”

One of the primary ways DCL reduces its impact on the environment while sailing in Alaska and Canada is to turn off the ship’s engines and rely on the port’s shoreside electricity grid when available. While ‘plugged in’ to shore power, the ship’s onboard lighting, air conditioning and other guest- and crew-facing systems were able to run nearly emission-free. Specific to Vancouver, where the port’s electric grid is supplied by hydro- and wind power, the Disney Wonder eliminated 99 percent of emissions by using shore power every time it called on Vancouver last year.

Using shore power is just one of many ways that DCL strives to minimize its impact on the environment, in support of The Walt Disney Company’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.

Among other initiatives, the cruise line continues to invest in low-emission fuels including using ultra-low sulfur fuel on the Magic and Dream classes of ships and liquefied natural gas (LNG) on its newest class of vessels, along with plans to use green methanol on a newly acquired ship that will homeport in Singapore in 2025. In addition, DCL has nearly eliminated all single-use plastics across its fleet by no longer using plastic straws, switching to refillable bath product dispensers in guest staterooms, removing plastic bags from onboard merchandise locations, and replacing plastic water bottles with recyclable aluminum ones.
