CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE FURTHER SALUTES MILITARY GUESTS WITH NEW MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY

Members of the Military to be Honored with Special Pin, Cruise Giveaway Each Month

MIAMI, July 20, 2023 – Building on its standing as the cruise line that carries the most military service members, Carnival Cruise Line has expanded its Military Appreciation Gathering into a full Military Appreciation Day, on all sailings in North America.

Beginning the week of July 24, Carnival’s Military Appreciation Day will be held on each ship. Guests will see special messaging presented on the Carnival Seaside Theater screen and will also hear announcements from the Cruise Director and Captain. On sailings of four days and more, a large United States Flag will be displayed in the ship’s atrium throughout Military Appreciation Day.

“At Carnival, where we’re proudly known as America’s Cruise Line, we’re intent on honoring our military heroes and expanding our Military Appreciation Gathering into a full day is a wonderful tribute to the sacrifices our Armed Services personnel and their families have made,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Carnival already carries more active and retired military service members than any other cruise line, and we are proud that our new Military Appreciation Day will serve as an incredible salute to military service members and their families.”

Every Carnival cruise currently features a Military Appreciation Gathering and those tribute events will remain an integral part of Military Appreciation Day with several enhancements. Now, guests can learn more about Carnival partner Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building strong, stable and secure military families. Carnival will soon make it easier for guests to donate to Operation Homefront, with a quick swipe of their Sail & Sign card. Guests may also purchase group photos from the gathering at a discounted rate, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. All members of the military attending the gathering will receive a special pin, and the longest-serving veteran will receive a special hero coin.

Each month, Carnival will give away a free cruise to one member of the military and a guest of their choice. Guests can enter the raffle by simply swiping their Sail & Sign card at the Military Appreciation Gathering.

On all Carnival sailings, guests in the military also have the opportunity to attend a Veterans Meet and Greet. On Carnival Celebration, Mardi Gras, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Radiance and Carnival Pride, the event will be held in the Heroes Tribute Lounge – a venue on several Carnival ships that salutes members of the military. These sailings will also include the Veteran’s Table – a reserved table in the dining room for veterans during Tea Time.

Carnival is also introducing a new beer, the Heroes American Pale Ale. The pale ale is created from Veterans Blend Hops, which combines citrus and tropical flavors. The Heroes American Pale Ale will be made exclusively on board Carnival ships with breweries, which include Carnival Celebration, Mardi Gras, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista. For each pale ale purchased, Carnival will donate a dollar to Operation Homefront. Carnival will continue its current practice of donating one dollar to the nonprofit when guests purchase a Heroes Tribute Lounge pint glass.

Carnival is proud to recognize military service, holding a Military Appreciation Gathering on every cruise since 2016, and honoring veterans in unique ways throughout the year, including exclusive savings and special discounts for members of the military. In 2023, Carnival will hold a total of 1,510 military gatherings on ships across the fleet (excluding Australia and ships sailing in Europe).

MSC CRUISES PUBLISHES 2022 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT DETAILING PROGRESS ON PATH TO NET ZERO CRUISING

Report outlines key milestones and steps taken toward Company’s sustainability commitments

Geneva, Switzerland – July 20, 2023 MSC Cruises published its 2022 Sustainability Report on Thursday, detailing progress on the company’s environmental and social practices throughout the year. The 64-page report lays out accomplishments including a substantial reduction in fleetwide carbon intensity, the introduction of new technology in the march toward net zero operations by 2050, growth in sustainable tourism efforts, and the development of a more diverse workforce.

Progress under MSC Cruises’ Sustainability Action Plan is divided into four key pillars, which are subdivided into six workstreams to which the company has publicly pledged to remain accountable. Below is a summary of progress toward each:

PLANET

  • Workstream: Transitioning to Net Zero Emissions

  • 33.5% reduction in fleetwide carbon emissions intensity since 2008

  • First LNG ship introduced to the fleet (MSC World Europa)

  • First solid oxide fuel cell system installed on a large cruise vessel

  • Development of new itinerary optimization software to reduce emissions of existing fleet

  • Workstream: Local Air Quality

  • Two ships delivered with shore power capability (MSC World Europa and MSC Seascape)

  • Two existing ships retrofitted with shore power capability (MSC Poesia and MSC Preziosa)

  • Workstream: Scrutinizing Resource Use and Waste

  • 9% reduction in water consumption per guest compared to 2021

  • Two ships delivered fully compliant with the most stringent water treatment and discharge standards (MSC World Europa and MSC Seascape)

  • 6.5% increase in waste segregated for recycling (now over 25% of total onboard waste)

PEOPLE

  • Workstream: Supporting Our People

  • New recruitment strategy expanding diversity of workforce

  • Average of 26 hours of training performed per person

PLACE

  • Workstream: Supporting Sustainable Destinations

  • Miami and Barcelona terminals on track to receive LEED certification upon completion

  •  Provided workshops on sustainable operations for tour operators

  • Began using new tool to assess biodiversity impact of shore excursions and other activities

PROCUREMENT

  • Workstream: Procuring Sustainably

  • Renewed focus on removal of single-use plastic by 2024

  • Substantial increase in positive environmental credentials for onboard retail products

Linden Coppell, Vice President of Sustainability & ESG, MSC Cruises, said: “To ensure the appropriateness and continued relevance of our Sustainability Strategy and our Sustainability Action Plan, we are in ongoing dialogue with our employees, guests, and key external stakeholders. Through this listening exercise, we can ensure that our current focus areas are appropriate and identify any new areas as they arise – while we closely monitor the progress on the six key pillars of our action plan.”

MSC Cruises’ sustainability strategy is informed by a materiality assessment carried out in 2019 and revisited in 2021. The assessment ensures attention is focused on the issues most important to external and internal stakeholders, and where the company’s impact on the world means it has a responsibility to act. The Sustainability Advisory Board oversees these efforts for the entirety of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, which includes the MSC Cruises brand, and is chaired by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises.

Additional details of MSC Cruises’ progress within its Sustainability Action Plan include:

PLANET - Transitioning to net zero emissions, improving local air quality and scrutinizing resource use and waste

MSC Cruises is fully committed to playing its part in addressing climate change and promoting ocean biodiversity, and the company is accelerating efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Through close collaboration with technology companies, shipyards and fuel providers, the cruise line strives to push the limits of innovation and explore new possibilities. A momentous step in this crucial journey was the delivery of its first LNG-powered ship in 2022, marking a significant milestone on the path to a more sustainable future. MSC Cruises remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a more environmentally responsible cruise industry.

PLACE - Supporting sustainable destinations, developing terminals

MSC Cruises allows guests to visit some of the most beautiful and exciting destinations the world has to offer, and the company strives to deliver positive social and economic outcomes in the places it serves. Investments in sustainable cruise terminals are creating jobs and encouraging more visitors. MSC Cruises is also an active supporter of destination stewardship and continues to work collaboratively with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and other cruise lines to manage visitor numbers and support sustainable tourism. The line is a member of the CEO-led Sustainability Committee and the Sustainability Task Force of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), working closely with travel industry partners to develop and implement sustainable solutions for the industry.

PEOPLE - Supporting our people and enhancing crew well-being

MSC Cruises’ number one priority is keeping guests and crew safe and well. The company takes pride in the healthcare options aboard MSC Cruises ships and continues to maintain strict sanitation practices in the wake of COVID-19. MSC Cruises also has a comprehensive safety management system in place to identify risks before incidents occur. The crew onboard plays an important role in making the guest experience a success, and the cruise line knows how important it is to support their well-being. The company provides crewmembers with the training required to do a good job and supports those with high potential who want to grow their careers from within.

PROCUREMENTProcuring with a responsibility to the environment

Every year, MSC Cruises procures thousands of different items to support its ships and guests, ranging from engine parts to hand soap, and from crew uniforms to food and drink. Each of those items eventually has to be loaded onto a constantly moving fleet of ships. In 2022, the company’s Sustainable Procurement Committee initiated a comprehensive review of its processes to identify opportunities to find and move those items more sustainably. The cruise line wants to go beyond specific programs – such as eliminating single-use plastics onboard – and shift its mindset so that every purchasing decision is made with the environment and worker wellbeing in mind.

Destination Highlights

Sitting on the island of Sicily, famed for its cathedrals, vineyards and island beaches, Syracuse is a 2,700-year-old city, notable for its rich Greek and Roman history. Guests can explore the ancient ruins of Siracusa, gaze at Mount Etna and cruise around Ortigia Island, Syracuse's most picturesque asset.

Perched on the Costa Blanca, Valencia is the historic paella capital of Spain. Here, guests have the chance to visit a local farm and pick fresh ingredients to make their own authentic paella. Famed for its seafood, oranges and its striking City of Arts and Sciences, guests can explore this city by bike, taking in the old town and the 13th-century cathedral.

For those looking to expand their historical knowledge, Ephesus, Turkey, is a must-visit. Browse the Ephesus Museum, which details how this ancient port city was once the most important trading post in the Mediterranean region. Crafty visitors might like to take in a carpet weaving demonstration, learning the traditional ways in a handicraft center, or mingle with locals in a small village outside Ephesus and join them for a hearty breakfast after choosing to help with their harvest.

Provence in southern France offers some of the most picturesque vistas and enticing flavors of the Mediterranean. Stroll the classic streets and squares of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with a lavender ice cream, discovering where Van Gogh lived in the 18th century. Guests can also expand their palates with cheese and wine tasting in Avignon or explore the medieval villages and lavender museum of Luberon. Foodies can go searching for black truffle "diamonds" in the Provençal countryside, which will be paired with local wines in a subsequent tasting.

A call in Montenegro offers some of the most powerful contrasts for guests to explore. Discover Kotor, where the Montenegrin mountains rise up opposite the stunning cerulean Boka Bay. Walk the Kotor City Walls in an exclusive group tour of just 16 and visit the neoclassical Museum of King Nikola. Alternatively, board a small boat to explore the enchanting Gospa Islet from the water, which, legend has it, was created by dropping a rock into the bay after each successful voyage.

Santorini is one of the most iconic gems of the Mediterranean, with much to offer even the most seasoned of travelers. Enjoy a cocktail or a wine tasting amid the stunning white walls that make up Santorini, taking in the famous views of the turquoise Ionian Sea. The more adventurous can climb to the crater's rim of a still-active volcano on the 400-year-old islet of Nea Kameni, and then refresh with a swim in the warm thermal springs.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Declared Mission Blue 'Hope Spot' in Recognition of Ongoing Conservation Efforts

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Declared Mission Blue 'Hope Spot' in Recognition of Ongoing Conservation Efforts

Geneva, Switzerland – July 12, 2023 MSC Cruises’ private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, has been officially designated a “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue, the non-profit organization founded by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle to promote the protection of marine ecosystems. Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Foundation Board Member and Executive Committee Chair, and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, has also been selected as the island’s Hope Spot Champion.

With this prestigious recognition, Ocean Cay joins Mission Blue's global network of 154 Hope Spots, which are recognized as places critical to ocean health with the ultimate goal of achieving the status of Marine Protected Areas. Nominations are carefully evaluated by the marine scientists and policy experts on the Hope Spot Council, ensuring the final selection is both rigorous and reflective of global marine conservation needs.

When MSC Cruises took responsibility for Ocean Cay in 2015, the island had suffered from decades of industrial use, including aragonite sand mining. The company embarked on an ambitious restoration initiative, collaborating with the Government of The Bahamas, leading universities, marine scientists, and conservationists to restore the island's ecosystems.

Through substantial investment, the restoration project has already achieved significant progress. Nearly 5,000 trees and 75,000 indigenous plants, flowers and shrubs have been planted on the island, revitalizing the terrestrial environment. Meanwhile, the health of the surrounding waters is demonstrated by flourishing marine life, including the presence of loggerhead sea turtles. The ‘Hope Spot’ recognition shines a light on the critical role that restored ecosystems, like Ocean Cay, play in enhancing biodiversity and improving the overall health of our oceans.

The Marine Restoration Program covers 25 square miles of marine waters and ecosystems around Ocean Cay. It was expanded in 2019 when the MSC Foundation started its Super Coral Program to restore the island’s coral reefs. This initiative harnesses scientific collaboration and advanced research to identify coral genotypes known as “super corals,” which have evolved to better withstand thermal stress. They are then strategically outplanted to create hardier reefs which are more resilient to the extreme heat events of climate change.

The MSC Foundation is committed to furthering this work and continuing to raise awareness of the urgent need for ocean conservation efforts worldwide. This large-scale restoration and public information effort underscores the MSC Foundation’s commitment to restoring ocean health, enriching biodiversity and fostering a sustainable future for our Blue Planet.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, President and Chairman of Mission Blue, expressed her excitement about the designation, stating: "This recognizes the comprehensive restoration efforts and commitment to protecting marine biodiversity. Led by Pierfrancesco Vago, the restoration of Ocean Cay has been a multidisciplinary effort to re-establish the ecological balance in this limestone island and its surrounding marine estate. Ocean Cay will inform thousands of people weekly about the crucial importance of growing and outplanting thermally tolerant corals for marine conservation, ocean health and human wellbeing."

Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Foundation Board Member and Chair of the Executive Committee, and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, responded: “Being designated a Hope Spot is an important recognition for Ocean Cay Marine Reserve and helps focus attention on how we all have an important duty as caretakers of our Blue Planet. That responsibility is why the scientific research and restoration efforts of our Super Coral Program aim not just to create resilient coral reefs around Ocean Cay and in The Bahamas, but to simultaneously contribute to conservation knowledge and initiatives worldwide. I thank Dr. Sylvia Earle and Mission Blue for their tireless efforts, which inspire us all to cherish and safeguard the rich biodiversity of our oceans.”

This new acknowledgement reaffirms the status of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and the MSC Foundation Super Coral Program as frontrunners in nature conservation efforts, underscoring their pioneering role in marine conservation.

The Great Australian Culinary Voyage, also on Queen Elizabeth in January, promises to be an unforgettable foray into the world of food and wine, including special guest and award-winning chef Karen Martini taking over The Steakhouse at The Verandah.

The extraordinary Big Band Ball voyage in May sees dance and music lovers from all over gather to celebrate the magnificent Swing era, in between exploring the enticing ports of Japan on this nine-night circumnavigation. Seattle, Wash., July 11, 2023 — Holland America Line is making a unique opportunity even more special with the addition of astronomy experts to its 2024 Solar Eclipse cruise programming. Guests sailing on Koningsdam and Zaandam to experience the total eclipse in spring 2024 will have exclusive access to lectures, demonstrations and firsthand tips on how to make the most of their eclipse viewing.

University of California San Diego Professor Adam Burgasser will join guests on Koningsdam as the ship sails off the coast of Mexico in the thin “path of totality” for the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse. Burgasser is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics, an observational astrophysicist, and the principal investigator at the university’s “Cool Star Lab.”

“We’re positioning our ships in the perfect location for guests to see the eclipse,” said Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment for Holland America Line. “For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so being able to receive the guidance of a renowned physicist like Dr. Burgasser is an exciting opportunity for our guests. We’re known for creating immersive programming, and this will be an unforgettable live event.”

Leading up to the eclipse, Burgasser will educate guests through special lectures on the ship’s World Stage and help them create their own eclipse viewers. During the eclipse, he will help guests safely view and understand this rare occurrence from unique positions on the ship.

“This first total solar eclipse in North America in seven years is something astronomers — amateur and professional — are all excited to observe, and there’s no better or unique place to observe it than at sea off the coast of Mexico,” said Burgasser. “I look forward to joining Holland America Line guests aboard Koningsdam to witness this phenomenon and help them better understand the science and history behind it.”

Koningsdam will embark April 5 on a 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise, which positions the ship along the coast of Mexico for a total view before crossing the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. The San Diego, California, to Vancouver, Canada, itinerary departs April 5 and heads south to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, before spending the day at sea on April 8 for the eclipse. Koningsdam will then stop at Puerto Vallarta in Mexico before crossing over to Hawaii.

Guest Presenter Jim McParland will lend his expertise to the eclipse experience aboard Zaandam with lectures and demonstrations when the ship also is in position for total viewing.

Zaandam will depart March 30 on a 14-day Solar Eclipse Cruise roundtrip from San Diego and will be positioned for a total view of the eclipse as it tracks over Mexico. The ship will be in Mazatlán, Mexico, on eclipse day.

European Waterways’ New and Exclusive ‘Venetian Lagoon’ Island-Hopping Cruise Explores the Smaller Islands of Historic Venice Lagoon

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

European Waterways’ New and Exclusive ‘Venetian Lagoon’ Island-Hopping
Cruise Explores the Smaller Islands of Historic Venice Lagoon

Six-Night All-Inclusive ‘Voyage of Discovery’ Aboard La Bella Vita Takes Guests From ‘The Island of Lace’ to the Skillful Glassblowers of Murano.

While large cruise ships are banned from entering the famous Venice Lagoon to protect its fragile infrastructure, the Giudecca Canal – one of Europe’s most celebrated canals – and the Venice waterfront remain accessible to smaller vessels that include European Waterways’ 20-passenger luxury hotel barge, La Bella Vita. This year, responding to customers’ requests, European Waterways announced the addition of the Venetian Lagoon island-hopping itinerary, an optional new route – exclusive to European Waterways – that explores many of the smaller islands in the lagoon. These islands are often overlooked by tourists because they are difficult to visit without some form of private transportation, but they can now be experienced hassle-free in the more relaxed, luxurious settings of La Bella Vita.

“The islands within the lagoon are truly the ‘hidden gems’ of Venice,” noted Derek Banks, Managing Director of European Waterways. “They are often less crowded, yet are equally steeped in the history, culture, art, and traditions of this sophisticated city. On our Venetian Lagoon cruise, guests don’t have to worry about making their own arrangements to visit each of them. Instead, they can just soak up the atmosphere as they cruise in comfort, sharing with fellow passengers the gastronomic meals prepared by an onboard master chef, paired with some of the finest regional wine.”

An Island-Hopping Adventure
The 20-passenger La Bella Vita hotel barge – the largest in European Waterways’ extensive fleet – typically cruises between Venice and the Renaissance city of Mantua along the River Po and Canal Bianco. For guests who wish to explore the extraordinary attractions of the islands in the lagoon, the vessel’s optional Venetian Lagoon itinerary will introduce them to such islands as Burano, the “Island of Lace”; Murano, renowned for its iconic glassware; and glamorous Lido – home to the Venice Film Festival. They’ll also call at the town of Chioggia, famed for the 18th century Church of San Domenico which is set on its very own island, as well as its picturesque canals, which will be explored on a traditional locally-built boat.

La Bella Vita – The Good Life!
And it all starts with a Prosecco welcome aboard the stylish La Bella Vita hotel barge, greeted by the captain and crew, who are ready to provide outstanding service throughout. This is followed by the first cruise through the Giudecca Canal at sunset. Other highlights of the week-long voyage include the island of Sant Erasmo, called the “market garden of Venice” for its vegetable gardens and fields of artichokes; the island of Pellestrina, where guests can bike along the famous six-mile sea wall; and San Lazzaro degli Armeni, which is still occupied by the Armenian monks today. The last stop will be in historic Venice itself, mooring just outside the Naval Museum, where guests will visit St. Mark’s Square, the Cathedral of San Pietro, and Doge’s Palace –once the seat of the Venice government.

Venetian Lagoon cruises are offered at the same rate as those of La Bella Vita’s classic cruise on the River Po. They start from $4,550 per person based on double occupancy. Private, whole-boat charters are also available starting at $83,500.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Celebrates First Coral Nursery

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Celebrates First Coral Nursery

MSC Cruises is excited to share that the brand’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve was featured on NBC’s TODAY Show this morning in celebration of the successful beginning of its first coral nursery in the Bahamas in conjunction with the MSC Foundation.

MSC Foundation established the Super Coral Program as part of Ocean Cay’s focus on sustainability. The program’s goal is to reverse the worldwide decline in coral populations, and it involves growing sample specimens on so-called “coral trees” just under the surface of the protected waters surrounding the island. Coral trees are grouped into a nursery where researchers monitor specimens of critically-endangered species to determine how they cope with ocean conditions—in hopes of saving existing coral populations and ultimately re-growing coral that is strong enough to withstand the stresses of climate change.

As featured in the segment, several of the trees in these coral nurseries are now filled with coral and showing promising results. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and MSC Foundation plan to expand these coral nurseries to 13 trees in 2023, which can produce over 1,100 coral fragments per year.

MSC Cruises is thrilled that viewers had the chance to learn about the brand’s commitment to sustainability this morning and is looking forward to welcoming many more first-time visitors to Ocean Cay to experience the island first-hand.

Starlink rollout on AIDA ships takes place faster than expected / AIDA travelers and crew benefit from more bandwidth and faster internet connections / Starlink Special: Double data volume for internet packages and 50% discounted social media flat rate "Fifty" for kids & teens.

Great news for AIDA guests and crew: by October 2023, all ships in the AIDA fleet will be equipped with SpaceX's innovative Starlink broadband service. This will enable AIDA Cruises to offer the best available Wi-Fi experience at sea before the end of the year.

"Our project team has already equipped three ships in the AIDA fleet with Starlink antennas and the field test has been very convincing. Guests and crew appreciate the faster internet connections and enjoy the more comfortable web surfing. Digital work on board is also made easier. We are very much looking forward to offering this new standard on all ships very soon," reports Steffi Heinicke, Senior Vice President Guest Experience & OBR.

On AIDAblu, AIDAbella and AIDAstella, guests can already benefit from a Starlink special offer with increased data volumes in the Internet packages from mid-July. With the special introductory offer "Starlink Special", the Internet packages L, XL and XXL can be purchased at the usual price with twice the volume. The volume is doubled automatically for packages that have already been booked. Parents of kids and teens can look forward to a 50% discount when booking the social media flat rate "Fifty" on the myAIDA* service portal.

The connection of the fleet to the new broadband connection that AIDA makes possible, is a significant benefit for their crew. This milestone improves communication to AIDA shore colleagues and thus intensifies cooperation. The lived AIDA culture becomes even more alive as a result. By increasing the data volume, each individual crew member benefits in terms of private use. The regular exchange with family and friends gives employees a feeling of being at home at sea. Their shared moments from life and work on board on their own social media channels offer individual insights into the diverse AIDA job worlds.

The fleet rollout of Starlink within Carnival Corporation started in December 2022 with Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises ships. Thanks to the exemplary and dedicated work of the AIDA project team, the fleet-wide connection to Space X's Starlink low earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology and associated IT infrastructure will be completed on AIDA ships ahead of schedule, by mid-October 2023.

In the future, AIDA guests and crew members will have access to a reliable, fast and even more affordable Internet connection in all AIDA destinations through a combination of different technologies, services and broadband connections. This opens up completely new possibilities for travelers who cannot do without the Internet or who want to stay in touch with friends and family and share their travel experiences.

Guests can take advantage of this introductory offer until the complete conversion of the entire AIDA fleet, which is planned for fall 2023. During the summer, the ships AIDAprima, AIDAperla, AIDAnova and AIDAcosma will also be equipped. AIDA guests will be informed of the current rates before the start of each voyage and can book them in the myAIDA service portal. Guests who have already booked their cruise can pre-book desired services such as Internet packages and social media flat rates at www.myAIDA.de.

Incredible 1920s-style Queen Anne cutaway unveiled as Cunard marks 183rd birthday

Incredible 1920s-style Queen Anne cutaway unveiled as Cunard marks 183rd birthday

VALENCIA, Calif., July 5, 2023 -- Cunard unveiled a remarkable new cutaway image of its newest ship, Queen Anne, which pays homage to the luxury cruise line's uniquely rich heritage.

Released yesterday to celebrate its 183rd birthday, the intricate animation has been designed in the style of Cunard's iconic advertising posters from the 1920s, offering a playful glimpse inside the ship's interiors.

Artist Dominik Bulka was commissioned to create the masterpiece, painstakingly hand-sketching each element of the design, before electronically stitching the constituent scenes into a single digital image.

The cutaway illustrates many of Cunard's signature venues and public spaces, including the iconic Grand Lobby and Golden Lion pub, as well as brand new concepts for Queen Anne, such as the exhilarating new show bar inspired by historic, bold electric light installations – Bright Lights Society.

But eagle-eyed observers will also notice a number of weird and wonderful depictions that reflect Cunard folklore. For example, on deck one, you'll find two bellhops feeding a hippo in a swimming pool in a mischievous reference to a well-known transatlantic crossing.

In 1963, on board Pavia, there was a very special guest that required a cold shower every hour during the day. Three-year-old Jimmy was a hippopotamus making his way from Naples to Chester Zoo; in fact, he travelled on deck with an awning over his cage to protect him from the sun.

Elsewhere, famous faces have been woven into the cutaway – from past guests such as David Bowie and Nelson Mandela, to the man who founded the iconic luxury cruise line, Sir Samuel Cunard.

Cunard is world-renowned for sailing guests around the world in comfort, style, and luxury, and with this latest artistic endeavour, the luxury cruise line is taking inspiration from its past to define the next chapter of its future.

The image places an emphasis on the quirky and unexpected, with flying bellhops just one surreal representation of the immersive experiences that can be found onboard a Cunard ship. The illustration also details the major venues onboard, and where guests can find them.

A number of limited-edition cutaway posters will be created ahead of Queen Anne's maiden voyage on May 3, 2024.

"We are incredibly excited about the launch of Queen Anne and this magnificent cutaway image brilliantly encapsulates the essence of playful luxury that guests will experience onboard our newest ship," said Matt Gleaves, VP, Commercial, Cunard North America. "Cunard guests receive an exclusive experience sailing aboard our fantastic fleet of Queens and we are always keen to showcase the unique touches that make our voyages one-of-a-kind. Whether it be posting your mail in the middle of the Atlantic or marvelling at art etched by royalty, you are sure to create unforgettable moments with Cunard."
